Electrical specification is fixed at the order stage, so motors, panels and switchgear are built for the supply at your site rather than adapted after the container is opened.

Ethiopia is landlocked, which is the first thing that shapes any quotation we write for it. Everything arrives through Djibouti and moves inland, so the delivered price and the lead time are built around that leg rather than treated as an afterthought. Buyers here are frequently working to a foreign currency allocation, which makes a firm written price and a firm lead time more important than usual.

Coffee, oilseed and the processing base

Coffee is the anchor. Washing stations, hulling, grading, sorting and roasting equipment, with most of the interest in adding value before export rather than in serving the domestic market. Sesame and niger seed cleaning and pressing follow, then grain milling for teff, wheat and maize, where teff in particular needs equipment that suits a very fine grain rather than a machine designed around wheat. Dairy processing is growing around Addis Ababa and Bishoftu, and we see steady demand for water treatment, packaging lines and cold storage tied to the industrial parks at Hawassa, Bole Lemi and Dire Dawa.

Altitude changes the machine

This is the specification point that gets missed most often. Much of Ethiopia sits well above 2,000 metres, and thinner air reduces the cooling capacity of air cooled motors, compressors and condensers. A machine rated at sea level will derate at Addis Ababa altitude, and a refrigeration plant sized from a sea level catalogue will fail to hold temperature on a warm afternoon. Tell us the altitude of the site along with the throughput and we size for it. We would rather quote a larger compressor than explain an underperforming one later.

Electrical supply

Ethiopia runs at 220 V single phase and 380 V three phase, 50 Hz. That 380 V figure is lower than most of the region, so motors and contactors are specified for it directly rather than assumed from a neighbouring market.

Routing and documentation

Cargo discharges at Djibouti and moves to Addis Ababa by the electrified railway or by road, and we quote the inland leg as part of the delivered price. Shipments are documented for both the Djibouti transit and the Ethiopian import, and we prepare the technical file for Ethiopian Standards Agency requirements as part of the order. Because the foreign currency allocation usually has to be applied for against a firm proforma, we hold our quoted price for a stated period and put that period in writing, so the figure you take to the bank is the figure you will actually pay.
